Luo Ethnic Groups of East Africa
We, the Luo people, also known as "Lwo," are a diverse group of ethnically and linguistically related Nilotic communities spread across a vast region. According to what our forefathers told us, we originated from Gilo – generally associated with the modern site of Khirbet Jala, near Jerusalem (a town in the hill country of Judah, found in Israel according to the Old Testament).

The Luo community of New Zealand is a community group representing the East African Ethnic community of a Luo speaking ethnic background. Our members come mainly from Uganda, Congo, Tanzania, Kenya, South Sudan to mention a few. It is said that the first Luo who settled in Wellington came in the early 2000’s or late 1990’s.

We take pride in showcasing our cultural heritage at various events, including Luo Cultural celebrations, End-of-Year celebrations, Waitangi Day celebrations, multicultural gatherings, World Refugee Day, and Africa Day celebrations, to name a few.
Our main objective is to “advocate for our Luo migrant ethnic people” and increase cultural and social capital, creating better opportunities for everyone.
