Francis & Grace Ogwaro

Francis and Grace's Journey: From Uganda to New Zealand
Francis and Grace had a customary marriage in December 1972. Both their families are from Alur tribe in Nebbi District, Northwestern Uganda.
When the Luo community in New Zealand began to identify collectively rather than by their countries of origin, Francis Ogwaro was chosen as the inaugural Chairperson, with Grace Kayeny Ogwaro elected as Treasurer in 2016.
Francis's journey to New Zealand started in 2002, following his exile from Uganda due to political unrest stemming from a coup in 1985. He initially sought refuge in Sudan, then Ethiopia, before settling in New Zealand. During this period of separation, Grace and their children, including newborn son Jenkins Rwothomio, moved to Nebbi to live with Francis's parents. Communication between Grace and Francis ceased for about six years, leading Grace and the family to believe Francis had passed away. Thankfully, communication resumed, and after nearly 21 years apart, Grace, Jenkins, and granddaughter Krishna reunited with Francis in New Zealand in July 2005.
Their other children—Peace Angiya, Faith Atimango, Frank Owachgiu, and Esther Canunuti—are married and reside in Uganda, where they have families of their own. Francis and Grace now cherish their roles as grandparents to over 20 grandchildren.
To celebrate their reunion and express gratitude, Francis and Grace remarried at St. Bernadette’s Church in Naenae on 28 January. They also applied to bring their nephew and niece to join them in New Zealand, successfully reuniting their extended family.
Today, Francis and Grace serve as respected elders within the Luo Community, offering valuable advisory support to the entire community in New Zealand. Their journey is a testament to resilience, love, and the enduring strength of family bonds across continents.
