Welcome to the LUO Community New Zealand

Joyce Atim & Family

As like many other refugee families in pursuit for a place of resettlement despite facing multiple adversities, our journey to New Zealand was both challenging and fulfilling.

Faced with the conflict in Sudan, we sought opportunities to escape through UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee) who then allowed us to resettle in the Mangere Refugee Centre in 2009. Which acted as a transitional period in our lives until we were able to relocate to Wellington and join the South Sudanese community.

Post-resettlement, we continued to face multiple challenges, struggling with language barrier, cultural differences, and a sense of being outsiders. But soon we navigated through these challenges with the support of our newfound community (Luo Community).

Anena Isbella (Joyce’s daughter)

Our family unit comprises our resilient mother, Joyce Atim, along with other siblings of mine: Emma Poni, Paul Owaci, and me. Additionally, we have Noah Aropmoi (Joyce’s grandson), who is Emma’s son. Starting our life in New Zealand without extended family, we’ve leaned on each other for support and encouragement.

In our new chapter, my mother (Joyce) has embraced a role in caregiving, contributing her skills to the community. Meanwhile, Emma has ventured to Brisbane, Australia, where she is carving out her path. Paul has completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science and is currently pursuing his Masters. Myself, I am actively engaged in my education journey, working toward completing my Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and Psychology. And as for Noah, he is thriving in his primary school years, embodying the hope and potential of our collective journey.
